Filipinos and Their New Year Celebration

Just like in any other parts of the world, the new year is also welcomed with a big bang here in the Philippines.

Firework shows sponsored by both the government and private groups are popular and are enjoyed by the people. There has been a shift of practices from lighting fireworks at home to just watching firework displays due to the previous increase in the number of firework-related incidents.

The use of noise makers is being advocated continuously instead of fireworks.

Still, old habits die hard since many Filipinos believe that the noise from fireworks ward off bad spirits or misfortunes. Fireworks are still a big part of the celebration.

Families prepare very special food during New Year and eat together as the clock strikes 12 midnight.

One belief during this feast is that every household should have a set of 13 different kinds of  round-shaped fruits. Each round fruit symbolizes prosperity for each month of the year. Having an extra 13th fruit means surplus of blessings.

Celebrate and welcome the new year with Filipinos and you will have an unforgettable experience!
